‡ ROUTE MAP
Duration: 2 Days
Description: Depart Wat Pa Mok heading north; the river is still used by sand barges and there is a lot of activity on the riverside as the barges are loaded. Approaching the City of Ang Thong there are some interesting Wats on the western riverbank; Wat Plot Sat has an interesting tower somewhat like a Chinese pagoda. Beyond this point no commercial traffic uses the river; just the occasional small sampan with fishermen tending their nets.
Beyond Ang Thong the many shoals and channels make navigation difficult; experience and sophisticated navigation systems come into play. Further north and it is only technology which allows 'Montha' to seek the unseen channels which snake along the riverbed. Depending on the river levels it may not be possible to continue much past the Chaiyo Township, and it may be necessary to transfer to the longtail boat to complete the 6 kilometers to Wat Chaiyo Worawihan.
This monastery houses the Buddha image 'Phra Maha Phuttha Phim', which is highly respected by inhabitants of neighbouring provinces. This large seated Buddha image in the attitude of meditation was constructed during the reign of King Rama IV, The temple is also well known for the sacred amulets called 'Somdet Wat Chaiyo' which are now rare and very popular among collectors.
Return to Wat Pa Mok is by retracing the morning's upriver course. The night is again spent at Wat Pa Mok before resuming your selected down-river itinerary.
