Description :

DAY 1

Pak Kret (Bangkok) – Koh Kret – Piyawan Garden House (Overnight on board)

Itin 4-1

Your voyage departs from Wat Choeng Lom, Pak Kret.  Located only a 6-minute drive from the Stage 2 Expressway and 15 minutes from Don Mueang Airport, the temple makes a convenient, traffic free boarding point; vehicles can park adjacent to the wharf.

A short cruise brings us to the aptly named ‘Suan Thip’ riverside restaurant; which provides a serene setting in which the buildings, gardens and food can only be described as works of art in their respective fields.  Almost invisible from the river the restaurant has private ‘salas’ (pavilions) set amongst luxuriant tropical foliage; water features, where the reclusive monitor lizards laze, abound; all overhung by giant trees, makes this, as its name infers, a ‘Garden of Heaven’.  The very charming and artistic owner has created the perfect setting for the delicious, artistic Thai dishes on her extensive menu.  Complementary lunch is selected from the full, a-la-carte Suan Thip Menu.

Itinerary 4-2
Overnight A-2

Following lunch, a 10-minute cruise brings you to the man-made island of Koh Kret.  Isolated from the eastern bank of the river by the Pak Kret Canal, the island has no roads or cars, only a narrow encircling laneway with paths leading to houses and the famous Mon potteries; the island is also famed for its unique foods and deserts.

On weekends, the island hosts a very upmarket weekend market and is bustling with local tourists savouring the island’s delicacies; the many small restaurants and bars lining the narrow thoroughfare do a brisk trade.  Items on sale include jewellery, unusual artworks, pottery and ceramics.

On weekdays, the pace is much more relaxed and Classic Barges can carry bicycles on request, so that you can more intimately experience the island’s unique culture and atmosphere.

Three hours of leisurely cruising northwards brings you to Piyawan Garden House, a small Thai-styled resort featuring architectural styles from four regions of Thailand.  Situated on the eastern bank of the river, you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks whilst watching the sun set over the water.

We pay a visit to the revered temple of Wat Phananchoeng, which predates the ancient capital, before continuing to a secluded spot on the Lop Buri River to see the working elephants takiny their evening bathe in the river.  You can hand-feed the elephants from the front deck, but be wary, if teased these gentle, but playful, animals are not beyond occasionally squirting water the unsuspecting guests.

Itinerary 4-5

After dinner, the barge will return to tie up at Piyawan Garden House; after dinner drinks are served whilst you catch up with the latest international news, enjoy music, a movie, or simply relax in the balmy tropical night before retiring to your air-conditioned stateroom.

DAY 2

Piyawan Garden House – Bang Sai – Bang Pa-in – Ayutthaya – Piyawan Garden House (Overnight on board)

Itin 4-6

The following morning, a full western breakfast is served at your convenience.  You have a selection of chilled fruit juices, tropical fruits, yoghurts and cereals.  Eggs (any style), bacon, ham, sausages and tomatoes are freshly cooked to your order.  This is followed by hot croissants, toast, selection of teas and freshly brewed espresso coffee.

Travelling further upriver brings us to the Royal Thai Folk Arts and Craft Centre at Bang Sai.  This large modern gallery hosts a wide variety of modern and traditional Thai works of art.  Being under Royal patronage, no commissions are paid to tour guides, making the many beautiful craft items, for sale at the lowest prices in the Kingdom.  The adjacent Traditional Thai Village displays many Thai crafts, which are undertaken in houses styled from various parts of the country.  The Centre also includes the largest freshwater aquarium in Thailand and a bird enclosure displaying many stunning tropical birds, particularly various coloured peacocks and hornbills.

Note: only the Gallery is open on Mondays.

A further hour’s cruising sees our arrival at the very charming boutique resort, Ayutthaya Garden River Home where we will stop for lunch.  The food is authentic, traditional Thai style and features organic herbs and vegetables grown in the resort’s garden.

After lunch, a short cruise brings us to Bang Pa-In and the unique Buddhist temple of Wat Niwet.  A cable-car will carry you across the canal to the Bang Pa-in Summer Palace.  The palace grounds contain a variety of beautiful buildings in European, Chinese and traditional Thai styles, including some of the best-known structures in the Kingdom.

Itinerary 4-10

Another hour and the appearance of the fortress ‘Pom Phet’ ushers our arrival at the ancient capital of Siam, ‘Ayutthaya’.  As we approach the city, we pass the sites of the Japanese, British, Portuguese and Dutch settlements. It is here where the Dutch East India Company’s ships lay at anchor 400 years ago.

We pay a brief visit to the revered temple of Wat Phananchoeng, which predates the ancient capital, before continuing to a secluded spot on the Lop Buri River to see the working elephants takiny their evening bathe in the river.  You can hand-feed the elephants from the front deck, but be wary, if teased these gentle, but playful, animals are not beyond occasionally squirting water the unsuspecting guests.

Itinerary 4-12

We then cruise to the Pae Tevarage Floating Restaurant, where a Thai dinner is selected from the restaurant’s Thai menu; dinner is served on board as you cruise past the illuminated riverside attractions of Ayutthaya.

The barge then makes a night cruise to return to Bang Sai; the river becomes a silver ribbon reflecting the night sky, the silhouette of the tree-lined banks inky-black; the throb of the engine becomes lost in the gentle hissing of the bow wave; peace descends on the river.  Most guests retire prior to the return arrival at Piyawan Garden House.

DAY 3

Piyawan Garden House – Samkhok – Pak Kret – Bangkok

Itinerary 4-14

Again, the following morning, a full western breakfast is served at your convenience.

A short cruise brings you to Samkhok; stepping ashore at this ancient Mon town is like passing through a portal into the past.  Settled by Mon refugees fleeing the Burmese in the late Ayutthaya period, Samkhok was formerly the provincial centre before it was moved to Pathum Thani.  The town is not on the tourist maps but is a living museum of Thai culture; the narrow lanes and alleyways are lined with shop-houses selling everything from gold jewellery to spices and clay charcoal burners.

Morning tea is served on the way to the now familiar ‘Suan Thip’ restaurant for another sumptuous lunch before continuing to Pak Kret for disembarkation.

Transfers to and from the boat can be arranged to suit your travel plans.
